MacOS 9: AIM 4.1 vs AIM 4.7 vs Netscape 7+AIM

AIM 4.1 works, but you have to use ResEdit or Resourcerer to edit the server address inside the program. AIM 4.1 lets you change the port in preferences, but after almost every session, I have to change the port to 5190 again because it gets mysteriously changed to 5191 (usually), 80 (once), or some random three digits (once).

AIM 4.7 lets you change the server address in preferences and has loads more options. It even lets you save sets of preferences (for other screennames or just to try a very different config). But so far, it doesn't connect for me, because it gets stuck on authenticating.

Netscape 7 with built-in AIM lets you change the server address, and works perfectly. No need to keep putting the port back to 5190. But sometimes Netscape 7 will lock up the whole machine and you have to just use the power button to force it to reboot.

(T.T) *tears for AOL Instant Messenger on classic Macs*

[EDIT 1: O! Hey! I forgot that I can configure Netscape 7 to launch its built-in AIM without also showing a browser window! It's almost like having a stand-alone working AIM! I'll have to see if I can launch Classilla browser while Netscape 7's AIM is running, though; I know I can't launch Netscape 7's browser while Classilla is running.]

[EDIT 2: Nope, can't launch Classilla while Netscape 7 has only its AIM window open if you have only one user configured in the browser. Trying to makes Classilla show a window asking you to choose a user profile, and shows a padlock on the one that's in-use. So, I guess if you keep two profiles…]

Now, AIM 4.7 isn't simply getting stuck on the authentication stage. Instead, it tries for a bit, then says the password is invalid. But if I paste the same password into the AIM client in Netscape 7, it works.

So far, AIM 4.0.972 works on MacOS 9, and hasn't auto-incorrected the port number for me. But I've only told AIM to quit twice.

Macintosh Repository has a copy of AIM 4.0.972 that's already modified to connecto to iwart.ddns.net, so you don't have to do it yourself with ResEdit or Resourcerer.

Now for something completely different:
One other oddity, no matter which AIM client I get to connect on MacOS 9, if I just quit AIM, or if I sign out and then quit AIM, the next time I sign on, Phoenix System Message complains to me that I've exceed the maximum number of connections.

It looks like Phoneix System Message is saying I get at most two connections from one IP address. However, it acts like I'm allowed only one connection, and acts like I'm still connected after I explicitly signed out or quit all other connections. _(O_o)_/

I wrote too soon. AIM 4.0.972 just did the same thing to me as AIM 4.1: it clobbered the server port, changing it from 5190 to 5191.

If I set the port to 5190, save, and quit AIM, the it's fine when I launch AIM again. If I connect, and then sign out, and then look at preferences, it's still correct. But when I launch AIM next time, it's 5191.

:face_palm:
