I believe it does work on AIM 5.1 and earlier, but I personally haven't been able to get it to work.

Direct works with 5.1 i was able to get it to work but the other person must be running 5.1 as well.

given that it's a direct connection, the person initiating the direct connection probably needs to forward the used TCP ports, in the good old days of dial-up this wasn't a concern because your direct line dial-up connection didn't have a NAPT layer to traverse, so no port forwarding was needed.
