AIM Phoenix isn't stuck in a vacuum; protocols and things can be added to it, the more clients and data that are known the easier it is.
A lot of mobile clients, especially older ones, are written in Java which can easily be decompiled to show exactly how they work and thus also more easily rebuilt for modern devices. Therefore you should share everything, either by uploading it some place like archive.org, emailing it some place, etc.
As far as physical clients go, if they lack infrastructure then there's not much that can be done, but many of them will still work on WiFi and what not. If it is a physical client, then just mention the specific product model, far more will still work than one would think.
And if by Motorola IMfree, you're referring to the Motorola MX240a. Yes, it will still work without any sophisticated works, because it's just TCP/IP over a shared connection via a PC, nothing special about it.
In fact I will put it on my client archive if you email it to me: tonyshowoff[@]levelleap.com
^ Remove the [brackets]. Anyone may email me clients there. You can use 7zip for the best compression but that's not necessary.
