Ive been one of the users experiencing multiple problems
trying to get aim to work right for me.
For me, using windows xp home edition on virtual box,
i think i found the perfect version with no errors.
its AOL Instant Messenger 3.0.1464.0
if interested you can get it at the link below:

i haven't tried deadaim or anything with it yet,
but so far ive loaded and saved buddylists with no issues.
heres hoping it stays working for me.

As a man who uses the real desktop as well as a Windows 98 desktop Aim 5.0 works great for me, and I have no problems at all so I am not quite sure why you're having issues although personally my favorite version is 4.7 however, it's not the best because I tried to join an abundant amount of servers and all of them were either dead or some what full but the few that did respond and tried to talk and add me to theirs I never saw the invite and as suggested in "Compatibility" anything below 5.0 is not going to have groups or even being able to see most of my buddy's profile icon for that matter

Im using both a real windows 7 starter,
and a virtual box install of windows xp home with sp3,
but i also have a direct cable connection.

i was looking for something that worked for me for both windows versions as i might downgrade my win7 to win xp.

I thought this 3.0 was a good find, it was for me at first,
but as with all the others i tried this far, it too is
now experiencing issues with the buddylist also.

but this version tells me "there is an error getting your
buddylist from the server" so i dont think its just me.
will need to have iWarg look at the server and check.

contact list info prior to 4.x is stored client side, not in the server.

@iWarg
good to know ty, but im on 5.5 now.
as 3.0 wouldn't join the chatrooms (crashed instead)

while i was looking for a good client for my system.
many said 3.0 was good, but it had issues with the public
chats etc, there was also many reviews saying that
Aim 5.5.3589CA was the most stable release available.
but trying to find that version is ridiculously hard.
but thanks to a post here i got Aim 5.5.3589CA ENG
which im currently trying out and it seems to be good
so far, besides a few maybe non-related server hiccups
that iWarg is sorting out now, seems to be working very
good for me now.
