I have witnessed the official AIM client doing this a few times, it isn't the entire computer that is freezing, just the explorer shell. I still don't know the cause but it's likely a memory leak in the client triggered by a corrupt packet or something.

Yeah... is there any way I can fix this? I'd love to use AIM on Windows 10!

Maybe I shouldn't use 5.0?

i thought about making a small program like a widget just for the purpose of terminating the AIM process should this happen.. I discovered anything that wasn't tied directly to explorer shell (like visual studio and the web browser) didn't seem to freeze when this happens.. so I was able to get out of this situation by hastily scripting a line in visual studio to kill aim.exe.. you may try running AIM with administrator privileges, and see if that helps..
