When I try to log in into my AIM account on ver. 4.7 (or 4.6) on my mac it fails, and says: "The password you have provided is not correct for the current screen name", tho ver. 4.5 works perfectly fine...

I'm running Mac OS X 10.6.8.

4.7 mac is clearly using some different auth hash than the pc version...

Is there any way to make it work?

Where did you happen to put the hosts file?

It's in System -> Preferences.

Okay, just making sure - that was indeed where I put mine. Do I have to do anything else with the hosts file once it's all written and saved?
