On Classic Mac OS? forget hosts file, go RESEDIT!

Resedit. It's like this really cool little tool for mucking about in classic Mac OS application resources

Changing the resource string for AIM's login server is relatively easy with Resedit.

Visual example: https://i.imgur.com/COV09PN.png

First download AOL instant messenger 4.1 for Mac from the Downloads here and install it.

Then go to http://www.mac.org/utilities/resedit/ and download Resedit.

Then open Resedit, and use the open command from the File menu and find your AIM 4.1 application and open it there in resedit.

Then find STR# and open it.

Look for string named "AIM Server" and open it.

Replace 1st string contents with iwarg.ddns.net

use the save command from the File menu.

Quit Resedit. Launch AIM. Login to your AIM phoenix account and enjoy never having to muck with your Hosts file.

This isn't probably complete though... It gets it logged in, but there are three things you had to changed in hosts before.. I'll probably dig more later.

Oh also, I wouldn't change the 2nd string... That's for port number and ultimately can be changed within the applications usual preferences, so I'd leave that be.

I tried making the edit with ResEdit v3 however when I try to save the change, I get an error message that says there isn't enough room on the disk to save the file. I have ample space on my HD (around 10GB). Any ideas what's going on? Thanks!

I don’t have it in front of me at the moment, but maybe:

1)Move the AIM application file to a different drive when editing.

1)Use Save As instead of save(not sure if this is an option.)

3)Use the ResEdit version I linked instead of version 3? I mean, as far as I’m aware there is no ResEdit v3...

This is interesting if I get this to work consistently I will put it up in the macintosh repository for every version.

Talk to me if you can get AIM to work on Mac OS 8.1 or any other classic systems.

My only weird problem is that the port number in the AIM application preferences kept changing to something different than 5190... I don’t think it’s directly related to this... maybe a corrupt preferences file in my system folder, but it did fake me out as to whether what I was doing was working when it stopped AIM from connecting.

Some other things besides the AIM server that can be changed in resedit:

Error messages.
Graphics
Menu item names.

That second one can be useful for making it clear the app you're using has been altered.

If you go into the PICT section instead of the STR# section, you can change the applications graphics.. particularly the little spash graphic that shows up in the login screen.

Something to think about if you're going to host altered copies of the AIM application for download.
