The bigger problem when it comes to connecting to older AOL clients is actually fooling them into using your Internet connection as a "modem".

you can set a proxy address though and i've seen people make clients connect to custom servers by setting the address as a proxy

whether or not people are still interested: winamp is still widely used. It's ironically still owned by AOL.

Also shoutcast streams are still well and good.

AOL sold Nullsoft/Winamp in 2013.
